We learn in Pirkei Avot (5:27): “lefum tzara agra (according to the effort is the reward)”. To the degree that we strive and invest ourselves in achieving a goal, to that degree we receive reward and experience delight. We also learn from this that to the same degree that a goal is challenging and the evil inclination takes hold, to that measure we receive tremendous spiritual light
Therefore, the more we strive to purify our hearts from selfish desires, the more intense those selfish desires become. The yetzer hara puts in ‘his all’ to the last moment and does not give up easily. What is our reward? There are many to list but suffice to say a few.
First, we will experience tremendous closeness to Hashem. Not in passing, but in a lasting way that stays in our mind and heart throughout the day. Our thoughts and actions will be founded on inner composure and happiness. We will become more in-tune with ourselves and our mission and be able to enjoy life simply because we have transformed our selfishness to selflessness. Just as Hashem created this world to bestow pleasure upon us, we will grow accustomed to bestow goodness onto others and in so doing emulate Him in the greatest way.
When we continuously work at elevating our spiritual side it will not be considered a sacrifice to leave our worldly chases behind since we will have attained da’at (spiritual knowledge) that lessens our need to battle with it.
Your Daily Meditation from Orit Esther
Close your eyes and think about something that is worthwhile investing in. It could be a relationship, a spiritual goal or yourself (developing a specific character trait or anything else). How motivated are you in achieving this goal? What are the obstacles that stand in your way? Prepare yourself for the possible ‘pitfalls’ along the way to attaining your goal. Now experience the pleasure and reward of fighting your way through.
