The beauty of greeting guests into our home (the mitzvah of hachna’saat orchim) is seen through the simple understanding of the Hebrew word for guest (ora’yach – broken into two, the word ohr and the letter chet).
According to the teaching of the holy Besht (taught through the book Degel Machaneh Efraim) when one welcomes a guest he welcomes the light of the letter chet. The letter chet symbolizes the world to come, the world of binah (high level of G-dly understanding). Therefore this mitzvah infuses one with the light of the Shechinah, wisdom and blessings through which one can be enlightened with greater understanding and closeness to G-d.
